गायत्री जयंती की तिथि को लेकर भिन्न-भिन्न मत सामने आते हैं। कुछ स्थानों पर गंगा दशहरा और गायत्री जयंती की तिथि एक समान बताई जाती है तो कुछ इसे गंगा दशहरा से अगले दिन यानि ज्येष्ठ मास की एकादशी को मनाते हैं। वहीं श्रावण पूर्णिमा को भी गायत्री जयंती के उत्सव को मनाया जाता है। श्रावण पूर्णिमा के दिन गायत्री जयंती को अधिकतर स्थानों पर स्वीकार किया जाता है। ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल दशमी-एकादशी को भी मान्यतानुसार गायत्री जयंती मनाई जाती है।

महाभारत के रचयिता वेद व्यास कहते हैं गायत्री की महिमा में कहते हैं जैसे फूलों में शहद, दूध में घी सार रूप में होता है वैसे ही समस्त वेदों का सार गायत्री है। यदि गायत्री को सिद्ध कर लिया जाये तो यह कामधेनू (इच्छा पूरी करने वाली दैवीय गाय) के समान है। जैसे गंगा शरीर के पापों को धो कर तन मन को निर्मल करती है उसी प्रकार गायत्री रूपी ब्रह्म गंगा से आत्मा पवित्र हो जाती है।
